ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:The Council of Urban Professionals (CUP) connects, empowers and mobilizes the next generation of diverse business and civic leaders. Founded in 2007, CUP is a 21st century leadership development organization with over 1,500 individual dues paying members, a national network of 20,000, and 65 partners spanning the financial services, law, media & entertainment, digital & technology, non-profit and public sectors. Through a series of forums, leadership development programs, and peer networks, CUP empowers diverse professionals to develop connections, opportunities, and expertise that best position them for top leadership roles, resulting in transformative impact on our communities.
 

ABOUT THE POSITION:

 

 

CUP seeks a dynamic and inspiring leader to build upon its success to date and to lead its expansion. The Executive Director will develop and implement the organization’s strategy (in collaboration with the Board), represent the organization’s mission as a key external voice, manage existing and new relationships and partnerships, drive fundraising, and manage, develop and continue to build the internal team.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will manage a team of seven, including four senior direct reports in Development, Marketing, Programs and Finance.  This is an ideal opportunity for an exceptional leader to scale and grow a leading organization that is diversifying the face of leadership across sectors.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Organizational Management:

  • Chart the course for CUP’s growth in partnership with the Board of Directors; ensuring that CUP remains both self-sustaining and impactful
  • Serve as a thought partner to the Board of Directors, building solid relationships with each member and levering their time and expertise effectively and efficiently
  • Manage, develop and mentor CUP’s program, development and administrative staff in the implementation of CUP’s strategic plan, serving as an inspirational and accessible leader who sees possibility in and celebrates others
  • Lead CUP’s expansion into Los Angeles and prepare the organization for growth into additional markets

External Relations and Revenue Generation:

  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with corporate partners, organizations and foundations key to CUP’s financial growth and programmatic goals
  • In collaboration with CUP leadership, identify, cultivate, and steward individual donors, foundations, and corporations; successfully raise funds from these sources
  • Develop and implement plans  to leverage both philanthropic and earned income revenue streams
  • Serve as the external face and chief representative to media, at conferences, and other public/private events
  • Lead CUP’s road show to potential markets, including San Francisco, Chicago and Boston
  • Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to position CUP as the go-to leadership development organization for aspiring professionals across race/ethnic, gender and industry lines

Strategic Planning and Execution:

  • Develop an ideal business model; lead the creation of new programs and services that address long-term member needs and that generate philanthropic support and earned income
  • Ensure that mechanisms are in place for gathering data and tracking results over time; elevate expectations for specific, tangible, and innovative outcomes that enhance impact
  • Partner with the Director of Membership to enhance member recruitment efforts through events, partnerships and former member outreach
  • Refine the strategy of a multifaceted career development, member cultivation and alumni engagement platform; lead implementation of membership development and engagement, board access and training, and member forums

 

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Commitment to and passion for CUP’s mission to connect, empower and mobilize the next generation of diverse business and civic leaders
  • Fifteen years of professional experience, with at least five years in a leadership position
  • Experience in leading a fast-paced, growing organization or department; specific examples of having developed and executed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to develop high-performing teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive relationships across a wide variety of individuals and groups, both internally and externally
  • Demonstrated success in non-profit fundraising or business development with a track record of having closed large gifts or deals
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills, a talented storyteller with an ability to persuade and inspire others and to engender loyalty and respect across a wide range of stakeholders
  • Exceptional listening and evaluation skills with the good judgment to make realistic and clear-cut decisions
  • Experience or familiarity with both non-profit and corporate sectors; experience working for a leadership development organization preferred
  • An appetite for the fast-paced environment of a growing non-profit organization
  • A keen intellect, with the ability to conceptualize, anticipate, and act on events that may create opportunities; the ability to be an independent thinker and creative problem solver
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred
