December 2010 Corporate Spotlight – Nielsen

Please describe Nielsen’s approach to diversity.

Diversity is critical to our success in delivering insights about how consumers watch and buy, developing our workforce, maintaining accurate and representative panels, and forging meaningful relationships with communities in the markets where we operate.  Understanding and promoting diversity within Nielsen is critical to our business not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it enables us to better meet the needs of our clients.

What sets your recruiting, career development, and work-life programs apart?

We’re committed to shaping our future leaders through exceptional training, development, and mentoring programs. These provide the tools to leave your mark on the company. Nielsen encourages a “promotion from within” philosophy, building on the knowledge and experience gained from within the company. We encourage our employees to flourish in this open, opportunity-rich environment and create wide career paths across all of our businesses.  The company offers a number of programs that can help employees manage their professional and personal lives, including an Adoption Assistance program, College Savings Plan, Dependent Care Spending Account, Educational Assistance, Employee Assistance Plan, Financial Education, Legal Plan, and discounted voluntary insurance products (auto/home, pet insurance, long-term care insurance, and others).

How long has Nielsen been a corporate partner of CUP’s and why does your organization value this relationship?

Various Nielsen associates have been involved with the Council of Urban Professionals since its inception.  This year we took a major step to become the “insight sponsor” of the Media & Entertainment Forum.  This expanded involvement is a win-win-win for The Nielsen Company, our clients – many whom also proudly support CUP, and the broader CUP community.

How do you think CUP will have the greatest impact?

The Council of Urban Professionals provides essential training, preparation, and access for the next generation of leaders who will take their place in the global economy.  The outreach programs CUP has developed continue to uplift and inspire our communities.
