Generation Citizen – Non-Profit Spotlight

What is your mission?
Generation Citizen (GC) works to ensure that every student in the United States receives an effective action civics education, which provides them with the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in our democracy as active citizens. We envision a country of young people working as active and effective citizens to collectively rebuild our American democracy.

GC teaches teenagers how to take effective political action. Through an innovative in-class curriculum, students work with local leaders to fix local problems. Through this real-world experience, our teens are building an active democracy.

What makes your organization so unique in the non-profit space?
GC is unique because of its focus on action- our students are at the core of our work. They choose the issues they care about in their community, and then take real action. Additionally, the class takes place during the school day- our ultimate goal is to make action civics something that every young person receives in school.

What is your organization up to at the moment & how can CUP Members be involved?
We're up to a lot! We're expanding our work in NYC and nationally, and using the attention on politics during this election cycle to make the case for action civics nationally. We've already got 2 CUP members on our Local Board, and would love more to join! We also have a Civics Day event on Monday, May 16th at the Museum for the American Indian in Bowling Green- students present on issues they've taken action on. We'd love to have you come judge!
