What is your mission?
Learning Leaders’ mission: To help New York City public school students succeed by training volunteers to provide individualized instructional support and other school-based support and by empowering parents to foster their children’s educational development.
What makes your organization so unique in the non-profit space?
Learning Leaders is unique in that our approach to supporting students academically is to build the capacity of adults in their lives and classrooms. By helping parents develop their knowledge and confidence to support their children academically as well as training community members to serve as one-on-one tutors and provide other support in the schools, Learning Leaders helps build a child’s critical educational foundation.
What is your organization up to at the moment & how can CUP Members be involved?
Learning Leaders continues to bring our successful programming to 250 elementary and middle schools throughout the five boroughs. This year, we plan a greater emphasis on early literacy, middle school success and measuring outcomes. Learning Leaders offers a variety of ways for CUP Members to be involved. For those with flexible schedules, they can commit to volunteer two hours a week during the school day for the academic year. We also have opportunities for corporations where they can sponsor a Book Buddies program for their employees, which allows corporate volunteers to participate as literary pen pals with students without having to leave the office. Finally, Learning Leaders is also looking for people who are inspired by our mission and want to learn more about our organization with the idea of possibly joining our Board of Trustees.
